As the future state of Israel approached independence in early 1948, acquisition teams scoured Europe for weapons in preparation for an expected conflict with neighboring Arab states. In addition to patching together a few barely functional Sherman tanks from British scrap yards in Palestine, the Israelis clandestinely purchased a number of better running tanks from depots in Italy. Only three Shermans were ready in time for the War of Independence. These three tanks intrigued me, being the Shermaholic that I am, and one, Tamar, is well-documented in photos.
